taly holds the European leadership in organic farming, with the sector recording a 4.5% increase in organic fields in 2023 compared to the previous year. The growth concerns both cultivated land and the number of operators involved.
There are over 84,000 active organic farms across the country, more than double that of Germany and a third more than France. Organic agricultural land now covers 2.5 million hectares, representing one in five hectares of the national agricultural surface. Italy is thus very close to achieving the goal of 25% of agricultural land dedicated to organic farming by 2030, set by the European Green Deal strategy under the Farm to Fork initiative.
However, despite the sector being worth over 9 billion euros in 2023 in Italy, it needs support and renewed momentum, especially considering the general decline in consumption.
